Indie’s Questions with Nick Daws

Name: Nick Daws

Occupation: Freelance Writer and Editor

Website: www.mywritingblog.com and www.nickdaws.co.uk

Who is your favourite author? Probably the late, great American science-fantasy writer, Roger Zelazny.

What is your favourite book? Lord of Light, by the aforementioned Roger Zelazny

What is the first e-book you read? The first full-length fiction e-book I read was ‘Cave’, an excellent mystery novel by UK indie author Ali Cooper.

What is your favourite book cover? I’m going to be cheeky here and nominate my own book/e-book, The Festival on Lyris Five. The cover is by Louise Tolentino, and perfectly captures the tongue-in-cheek tone of the novella.

If you could be a character from any book, who would you be and why?

That’s a tough one, but I’ll pick Frank Sandow, a character in several Roger Zelazny novels, including Isle of the Dead and To Die in Italbar. Frank has lived for 1100 years, is the 88th richest man in the galaxy (last time he looked), and runs a successful business creating new planets. He is partly a god, but a normal human being too. Although not perfect, he is not afraid to put his life on the line when the values be believes in are threatened.

Why would I like to be Sandow? Wouldn’t anyone?! He is one of Zelazny’s most successful creations. He is witty, cool and intelligent, yet also capable of quick, decisive action when the situation demands it. And unlike James Bond (whom he resembles a little, apart from not taking himself so seriously) he works for no one but himself. As a solo freelance myself, I probably relate to him all the more because of that!
